REEVALUATE & XReco synergy
XR, digital assets and creative media reuse
REEVALUATE and XReco connect around a common question: how can digital assets move beyond storage and become easier to discover, transform and reuse in new creative contexts?
REEVALUATE approaches this from the cultural heritage side, supporting prioritization, digitization, contextualization, provenance, rights management and Marketplace access.
XReco approached the downstream reuse challenge from the XR and media side, developing technologies that help users find digital material and transform it into 3D objects, scenes and immersive experiences.
REEVALUATE’s synergy work identified XReco as particularly relevant around media, data-driven content, extended reality and reuse-oriented digital workflows, including the discovery, access, reuse and recombination of digital assets.
About XReco
XReco – eXtended Reality mEdia eCOsystem – was a Horizon Europe project developing a data-driven ecosystem for the discovery, sharing, transformation and reuse of digital media assets in extended-reality environments.
Its core was a Neural Media Repository (NMR) supporting media search and discovery, surrounded by technologies for 3D reconstruction, XR authoring, content transformation, rights management and monetisation. XReco applied these results in media production, tourism and location-based immersive experiences.

Collaboration value
Connecting reuse-ready cultural heritage with downstream XR and media workflows
Cross-project visibility
The REEVALUATE–XReco relationship was reflected through communication and dissemination exchange. The projects supported each other’s visibility through newsletter references and social-media communication, helping connect REEVALUATE with audiences working on XR, media technologies and digital-content reuse.
This communication exchange also helped situate REEVALUATE’s work within a wider ecosystem in which digitized assets can move beyond institutional collections into media and immersive-production environments.
From reuse-ready heritage to XR content
The clearest connection between the two projects lies in the digital asset lifecycle.
REEVALUATE focuses on preparing cultural heritage assets so that they are sufficiently contextualized, traceable, rights-aware and discoverable to support meaningful reuse.
XReco developed technologies that operate further downstream: searching for suitable content, retrieving digital assets, creating 3D representations from existing media and assembling those assets into XR experiences.
Together, these approaches illustrate a broader reuse pathway:
Digitization → Contextualization and rights → Discovery → transformation → XR and creative experience
This is the core conceptual link I would emphasise throughout the page.
XReco results relevant to REEVALUATE
Neural Media Repository
At the centre of XReco was the Neural Media Repository, developed to support indexing, search and retrieval of multimedia content across different sources.
The repository could work with different types of digital media and was designed to make content easier to discover and reuse across organisational boundaries.
For REEVALUATE, this addresses a closely related challenge to the one tackled by the REEVALUATE Marketplace and contextualization tools:
digital assets need to be discoverable and understandable before they can be reused.
3D reconstruction from existing media
XReco developed technologies for generating 3D representations from existing 2D material, including neural reconstruction techniques.
Its objective was to reduce the effort required to create new XR content by enabling images and video to become inputs for 3D objects and scenes.
For cultural heritage, this provides a useful example of how existing digital material can continue further along the reuse chain rather than remaining a static record.
Rights and monetisation
XReco also treated rights management as part of the digital asset workflow.
Its Rights and Monetisation Management components were designed to associate digital content with licensing conditions and support the management of ownership, reuse and monetisation rights.
This is especially relevant to REEVALUATE’s work on IPR, provenance and traceable reuse.
Both projects therefore address the same underlying principle from different domains: making an asset technically available is not enough; potential users also need to understand whether and under what conditions it can be reused.
Open-source tools for downstream reuse
XReco also released several project components as open-source software, providing concrete examples of technologies that can sit further downstream in a reuse workflow.
Two are particularly relevant to REEVALUATE.
XRCapsules
XRCapsules is a web-based open-source tool for creating XR experiences.
It allows users to place digital assets in a 3D environment, define animations and triggers, and package the resulting scenes for use in Unity-based experiences.
From a REEVALUATE perspective, this represents the type of environment in which reuse-ready digital heritage assets could become ingredients for new immersive experiences.
ZAUBAR XReco Editor
The ZAUBAR XReco Editor is a web-based XR content-management platform designed for non-technical creators developing location-based AR tours.
XReco describes it as combining map-based authoring, digital media, AR delivery and real-time updates for applications including cities, museums and in-car experiences.
That makes it especially relevant as an example of how digitized and contextualized heritage could eventually become part of location-based interpretation, tourism and immersive storytelling.
From digital assets to cultural experiences
XReco’s demonstrators provide practical examples of where these technologies can lead.
One of its final use cases, Historic Timișoara, combined 3D models of landmarks with location-based AR, a virtual guide and historical storytelling for tourism and in-car experiences.
For REEVALUATE, this provides a useful downstream reference for the wider purpose of reuse-ready cultural heritage: digital assets can eventually support new forms of:
- immersive interpretation
- cultural tourism
- location-based storytelling
- XR media
- educational experiences
